Transfer your data to a personal account
Congratulations on your retirement! As you prepare for your next adventure, you might want to save some of the files from your school account to a personal email address. The instructions below will help you use the Google Transfer tool to copy email and Drive documents from your school account to a personal Gmail account. This tool will not work with Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.
Keep in mind that sometime after retirement, your school account will be disabled. Please complete the steps outlined below before the last day of the school year.
Step 1: Access the Google Transfer Tool
●While logged into your SCHOOL account, visit the account settings page:https://myaccount.google.com/
●Look for an option to “transfer your content.”
Step 2: Enter Your Personal Google Account Details
●Once logged into your school account through the Transfer tool, you will be asked to enter the email address of your personal Google account (the one you want to transfer your data to).
●Carefully and accurately type in your personal Gmail address.
Step 3: Verify account
●After entering your personal email address, you will need to retrieve a verification code from your personal Gmail account.
●Enter the provided verification code into your school account to continue the transfer
Step 4: Select What to Transfer
●On the Google Transfer page (back in your school account), you can select the data you want to copy to your personal account:
○Email: This will copy all your emails from your school Gmail to your personal Gmail.
○Drive: This will copy files and folders that you OWN from your school Google Drive to your personal Google Drive.
Note: Only files that you OWN will be transferred. If you have shared files that you would like to transfer, you must first make a copy of them so that you are the owner.
Step 5: Start the Transfer
●Once you've selected the data you want to move, click the "Start Transfer" button.
●The transfer process will begin. This process can take multiple days if you have a lot of data to transfer. Be patient.
Step 6: Check your email: Once the transfer is complete, you will receive an email in both accounts.
Common Issues to be aware of:
●Personal Gmail accounts have 15 GB of free data storage. If your school account contains more than 15 GB of data, you will receive an error message.
●Files that are shared with you will NOT be copied. Only files that you own will be copied.
